Black Light Burns, the avant-garde alter-ego of Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, continues to serve blow after devastating blow to the boundaries of musical convention. On their latest LP The Moment You Realize You’re Going To Fall, released on 8/14/2012 via Rocket Science/THC:MUSIC, Borland once again raises the bar with 15 assaulting tracks of undeniable sonic force.
Releasing their debut LP Cruel Melody in 2007 on Ross Robinsons IAMRECORDINGS imprint, with a studio lineup featuring Danny Lohner (NIN), Josh Eustis (Puscifer) and Josh Freese (Guns N’ Roses, Devo), BLB went on to tour with Sevendust, Chevelle and others. The band released a follow-up LP of covers and B-side material, 2008’s Cover Your Heart, and an accompanying DVD entitled The Anvil Pants Odyssey.
In 2009, after a stint playing guitar for Marilyn Manson, and several tours as bassist for From First To Last, Wes and Black Light Burns hit the road for an extended run with industrial powerhouse Combichrist, and contributed the track “I Want You To”, to the Underworld: Rise of the Lycans Soundtrack. BLB took a temporary hiatus while Borland stayed busy touring the world with the reformed Limp Bizkit, and recording their new LP Gold Cobra In 2012 BLB returned, to the delight of fans, with the track “It Rapes All In Its Path” on the Underworld: AwakeningSoundtrack, and the announcement of the release of a new LP. While fans will undoubtedly recognize Borland’s quirky trademark sound evidenced throughout The Moment You Realize You’re Going To Fall, he admits to some major stylistic diversion from previous Black Light releases.
“Although The Moment… differs from Cruel Melody in many ways, I think the changes sound like a natural progression”, says Borland. “I knew I wanted to loosen up the recording process and create in an environment where it was ok to keep mistakes and possibly even try to add in purposefully flawed elements. We recorded a lot of the drums to tape before pulling them in to the digital world and tried not to edit any of the takes. This is as far as I could get from a ‘perfect’ sounding record, which these days seems to be the standard.”
He adds, “Another progression on this record has been a higher level of recorded song intensity. What I mean by that, is the songs sound more like they were recorded in a live show environment, and are more intensely performed. I’ve always wanted to avoid the changes that songs go through when they’re taken from studio to stage.”
Black Light Burns hit the road in the Western US in September, 2012 in support of the new album. They have just announced an extensive tour of the UK and Europe for Jan/Feb 2012. The live lineup consists of Wes (vocals/guitar), Dennis Sanders (bass), Nick Annis (guitar) and Dylan Taylor (drums).
